CATCH4D at the NRW Sustainability Conference

Almost 700 participants discussed approaches and solutions for a sustainable future at the 10th NRW Sustainability Conference last Monday (7 October). The CATCH4D team presented the project at the ‘Market of Opportunities’ and used the chance to exchange ideas with other initiatives and local authorities. In addition to many participants, NRW Environment Minister Oliver Krischer also visited the stand of the project and the other institutes of the Johannes Rau Research Association, which presented themselves in the historic town hall in Wuppertal.

In times of climate change, the overheating of public spaces constitutes a major challenge for urban planning. The CATCH4D project is therefore creating a 3D thermographic model of the city of Dortmund to show where the risk of heat stress is particularly high in the urban area. The 3D shadow simulation presented at the NRW Sustainability Conference illustrates how green elements can be used to cool down public spaces and increase the amenity value. ILS scientists Dr Bastian Heider and Anna-Lena van der Vlugt explained the application and the aim behind the project to the visitors.

Since 2012, the NRW Sustainability Conferences have regularly brought together several hundred stakeholders from civil society, local authorities, business and science as a cross-thematic platform for dialogue on future challenges in the federal state of NRW.
